2007 Tolpuddle Award

This year’s Tolpuddle Award was presented to Labour activist Edith Johnston of London Ontario. The annual award named in honour of the historic Tolpuddle Martyrs is awarded to a retired worker whose Union is affiliated to the London and District Labour Council and who has made a significant contribution beyond the expectations of their job with respect to promoting or improving conditions in the workplace and the community and has demonstrated a long time commitment to the advancement of social activism. Edith was awarded the Order of Canada in January 2000 for her volunteering and outstanding service to Canada. Among her achievements she has served as Director of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario and Executive Secretary of the National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Foundation. She also served as trustee, financial secretary to UAW Local 27 when she began working at 3M Canada in 1953.
